Timothy G. McGillicuddy, 35, dyer, died attempting to save Ernest A. Morse, 38, carpenter, from drowning, Mansfield Center, Connecticut, January 20, 1924. As Morse was walking on thin ice on Town Pond 100 feet from the bank, the ice gave way under him. He sank in water 30 feet deep, rose, and made several efforts to climb out of the hole, but the ice broke off each time. McGillicuddy walked more than 150 feet over the ice to within five feet of Morse and flung his coat to him, but it failed to reach him, and McGillicuddy then broke through the ice. He did not touch Morse but soon sank and was drowned. Morse clung to the ice until a man arrived and pushed a ladder over the ice to him, which he grasped. He then drew himself out of the hole. 23993-1925
