Timothy R. Connor died attempting to save James Dorsey from drowning, Worcester, Massachusetts, December 20, 1921. While skating on Leesville Pond, James, 8, broke through thin ice about 100 feet from the bank, where the water was about 15 feet deep. Connor, 33, mail carrier, ran on the ice to within eight feet of James and then cautiously flung his mailbag toward James. James grasped the mailbag, and Connor, who had kept hold of the strap, started to pull him out of the hole. The ice then broke under Conner, and he fell into the hole. He rose to the surface and grasped the ice, but it would not support him. James sank and was drowned. Other persons arrived and threw a rope to Connor, but he was unable to grasp it and was drowned. 22048-1729
