Todd R. Parade helped to save Dale W. and Albert L. Johnson from suffocation, Fort Madison, Iowa, July 11, 1983. Dale, 25, was rendered unconscious as he cleaned the inside of a truck tank, which had been emptied of resin. Albert, 29, his brother, entered the tank to remove him, but he too was overcome. Pardall, 19, mechanic, obtained a rope and, with one end tied around himself, entered the tank. He removed the rope from himself and put it around Dale, then climbed out of the tank and, with the aid of two others who had arrived, pulled Dale out. Pardall re-entered the tank with the rope and put it around Albert, then climbed out again. He and the others pulled Albert out. Dale and Albert were hospitalized for four days; they recovered. Pardall was nauseated and suffered irritation to his eyes, nose, and hands, but he too recovered.
