Tony M. Curtis helped to save Lenis M. Bear Flying Over Water from drowning, Rapid City, South Dakota, June 7, 1994. Bear Flying Over Water, 47, struggled to stay afloat in Memorial Lake, at a point about 150 feet from the bank. Nearby, Curtis, 32, graduate student, was alerted; he ran to the lake and immediately entered the water. Joined by another man, Curtis swam to Bear Flying Over Water, then grasped him and started to swim back to the bank with him. En route, Curtis was submerged several times. Close to the bank, Curtis became fatigued, and others entered the lake and removed Bear Flying Over Water, who by then was semi-conscious. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. Curtis also required hospital treatment, for exhaustion. He recovered.
