Torger R. Helgesen, 39, miner, saved Agnes A. S., 19; Hazel O., 17, and Edna B. Holmes, 14, from drowning, Williston, North Dakota, July 13, 1923. While Agnes, Hazel, and Edna were wading in Little Muddy River, they stepped into a hole, where the water was eight feet deep. The girls were close together and were wholly submerged except the hands of Hazel. Helgesen, fully clothed, dived from the bank, swam a few feet, and caught hold of one of Hazel’s hands. He was submerged. When he rose, Edna held him around the neck, and Agnes held his free arm. He retained his hold of Hazel and swam with his feet 25 feet with the three girls to wadable water, going under the surface several times as he swam. Hazel was unconscious but soon revived. 23809-2065
