Tri M. Nguyen helped to rescue Miguel B. Salazar from burning, Houston, Texas, July 13, 1991. Salazar, 38, was trapped in the burning wreckage of his pickup truck after a four-vehicle freeway accident. Arriving at the scene shortly, Nguyen, 40, sheet metal worker, approached the burning vehicles, where a man was attempting to remove Salazar through a small opening in the wreckage. As the cab of the pickup was not accessible from the pavement, Nguyen mounted the hood of one of the cars involved in the accident, although that car was also burning. He seized Salazar and, together with the other man, removed him completely. The men then dragged Salazar away from the wreckage moments before an explosion occurred at the pickup. Salazar was hospitalized three weeks for treatment of second-degree burns and other injuries. Nguyen recovered from lesser burns to his arms and hands.
