Troy A. Rommen saved David A. Johnson from burning, Spearfish, South Dakota, July 2, 1995. Johnson, 51, was rendered unconscious when the plane he was piloting crashed during take-off. Rommen, 28, landscape business manager, was a passenger, as were his wife and daughter. The plane caught fire just after Rommen removed his wife and daughter. Rommen, who sustained a broken finger in the crash, then returned to the plane and entered for Johnson as flames issued into the cabin from the pilot’s side. Rommen unbuckled Johnson’s seat belt, then grasped him under the arms and pulled him from the plane. Other men who had arrived helped to take Johnson away from the plane, the cabin of which was shortly engulfed by flame. Johnson was hospitalized for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
