Tyrone W. Dunn saved Douglas E. Stuck from drowning, Huntington Beach, California, June 12, 1990. Stuck, 26, was surfing in the Pacific Ocean when, several hundred feet out, he fell from his surfboard, which then washed ashore. Stuck began to swim in, then, tired, called for help. Dunn, 22, who was on shore, was alerted to Stuck’s plight. He immediately entered the water and swam through the eight-foot-high waves to Stuck. Dunn grasped Stuck, who was nearly exhausted, and returned him through the heavy surf to shore. Arriving paramedics gave Stuck oxygen at the scene, then took him to the hospital for further treatment. He recovered fully.
