Ubald A. Arel helped to save Harris H. Wilder from drowning, Hadley, Massachusetts, July 6, 1917. Wilder, 53, professor, and his wife became distressed in the Connecticut River about 70 feet from the bank, where the water was eight feet deep. Ubald, 14, factory hand, ran through wadable water and swam 25 feet to Wilder. He grasped one of Wilder’s arms, and Wilder, who was much heavier than Ubald, put his hand on Ubald’s shoulder. Both went beneath the surface. When they came up, Wilder’s weight pushed Ubald below the surface a second time. Ubald let himself down deep in the water and freed himself. He swam to wadable water and then with another boy returned to Wilder, who had become unconscious. Each boy grasped one of Wilder’s arms and swam with him to wadable water. He was revived. 18136-1376
