V. Everett Nicholls, 18, leather cutter, died attempting to save R. Sherwood Cowan, 16, schoolboy, from drowning, Mitchell, Illinois, June 23, 1928. Sherwood waded on the sloping face of a dam in the Cahokia Diversion Canal and drifted into water eight feet deep 60 feet from the bank. Everett’s brother swam to him but left him following a struggle. Everett, who was almost fully clothed, dived from the dam and swam 60 feet to Sherwood. A struggle ensued, and both were drowned. 28488-2363
