Victor Carl Edwards saved three youths and attempted to save another from drowning, Chicago, Illinois, February 27, 1974. When he saw that four youths had broken through the ice covering a park lagoon, Victor, 17, furniture mover, went to their aid. He crawled about 30 feet to the hole, where the ice gave way under him. Victor got out then aided Leon Walker, 17, onto the ice and took him to the bank. On two more trips, using a branch and a leash, Victor removed John Hamilton Jr., 17, and John E. Walker, 16. By then the fourth youth, Luther D.Tillman, 9, had disappeared beneath the surface. Victor crawled back to the edge of the hole and probed the water in an effort to locate Luther. The ice then broke under Victor. While submerged, he searched underwater but still did not find Luther. By means of a rope held by men on the bank, Victor was pulled from the water. Divers recovered the body of Luther.
