Victor E. Milton, 15, schoolboy, attempted to save Amelia C. Ammon, 54, from burning, Yermo, California, March 27, 1915. Victor awoke and found his bedroom was afire. He ran through an adjoining room and left the house by diving through a glass door, thinking that Mrs. Ammon, the only other occupant of the house, had already escaped. He then heard Mrs. Ammon scream and saw her writhing on the floor 14 feet from the door he had just left. The rug and walls and ceiling of the room were aflame, and the heat was intense. Victor ran to Mrs. Ammon and dragged her toward the door. A piece of burning burlap fell on him, but he continued to the yard without stopping to shake it off. Practically all of Mrs. Ammon’s nightclothes were burned off, and she died six hours after the act. Victor was severely burned on the head, hands, and feet, his left hand permanently crippled. 14728-1252
