Victoriano M. Gamez, 40, laborer, attempted to save Joseph, 9, and Vitto Domino, 34, grocer, from suffocation, Dallas, Texas, May 2, 1915. Joseph was overcome by gas in a cistern 11 feet deep. His father, Vitto, entered the cistern to rescue him and was overcome. After one person had refused to go to their rescue, Gamez descended a rope into the cistern. He stooped to lift Joseph but was overcome. A man who wore a smoke-helmet removed Gamez from the cistern 15 minutes later, and Gamez was revived with a pulmotor, but he was disabled for six months. Joseph and his father also were removed from the cistern, but they could not be revived. 14745-1485
