Vincent D. Skrzypek helped to rescue Christopher G. Muroski from suffocation, St. Marys, Pennsylvania, November 17, 1989. Muroski, 25, was rendered unconscious by toxic fumes inside a pit at the industrial plant where he was employed. Skrzypek, 26, die setter, was one of two co-workers who entered the pit to remove him and who were also affected by the fumes. Skrzypek pulled Muroski to the ladder and carried him part way up, to a point where the other co-worker, joined by another man, seized Muroski and pulled him from the pit. Skrzypek followed. He, Muroski, and the other co-worker who had entered the pit were given oxygen at the scene, then taken to the hospital for further treatment. They recovered.
