Viola M. Brunelle saved George E. Whalen from drowning, Ware, Massachusetts, July 18, 1914. George, 11, who could swim only a few strokes, became distressed while trying to swim across a deep hole in Muddy Brook, and he went beneath the surface at a point 15 feet from the bank. He came up and went down again, and Viola, 12, schoolgirl, immediately waded 10 feet to the edge of the hole and swam about 10 feet to him. Other children became frightened and left the water. George grasped Viola and pulled her beneath the surface, but she pushed him away arid came to the surface. She then let herself down to get George, who had not come up. She grasped his hair and swam 15 feet to shallow water with him, then she dragged him to the bank. He was only weak and frightened. 13384-1026
