W. Bryant Arnold, 21, student, attempted to save Cecil W. Bates, 25, cashier, from drowning, Pioneer Park, South Carolina, July 31, 1929. While Bates was swimming in Pioneer Lake, he became distressed in water seven feet deep and called for help. From wadable water Arnold swam 90 feet to him, grasped his hair, and swam toward the bank. Bates’s legs became entangled with Arnold’s, and Arnold with great exertion swam a few feet and then became exhausted. He swam feebly toward the bank, and Bates sank. In the meantime, William F. Patrick, Jr., swam toward Arnold, reaching him as Arnold was becoming unconscious, and took him to the bank. Arnold was revived. Bates was drowned.
