W. Daniel Burns died helping to save Kyle W. Tatum from drowning, Ringold, Oklahoma, December 26, 1994. Walking atop a railing along the edge of the remains of an old bridge, Kyle, 11, fell into Pine Creek Lake. He called for help. A friend with whom he was fishing from the bridge, Daniel, 16, high school student, jumped from the bridge deck into the lake. After getting Kyle to the surface of the water, Daniel pushed him toward one of the bridge piers, and Kyle secured a hold to it. Another fisherman lowered a rope from the bridge deck to Kyle, and, as Kyle held to the rope, the fisherman towed him to the bank about 100 feet away. Daniel, who had submerged, drowned.
