W. Eugene Lenoir, 30, dairyman, saved Ruth G. McAuliffe, 15, from drowning, Charleston, South Carolina, September 3, 1924. While Ruth was bathing in the Atlantic Ocean off Sullivans Island, she was carried by a current to a point 400 feet from shore. Lenoir, who had a weak heart and weak lungs, waded from shore and then swam 300 feet to her. He became weak as he swam toward shore with her. After he had taken her 30 feet, a boat reached them, and they were taken into it. Lenoir immediately collapsed, and he was in a serious condition for several days. 27328-2284
