W. Roy Stokes, 12, schoolboy, died attempting to save Lorena J., 12; Sarah G., 13, and Charlotte Kenly, 8, from drowning, Coral, Pennsylvania, January 18, 1908. The girls, none of whom could swim, were together on the ice on a reservoir. The ice broke, and they fell into water nine feet deep. Stokes, who could not swim well and who knew that the ice in the vicinity of the hole was not safe, skated to the hole from a point 400 feet distant. Lying face downward, he pulled Lorena up on the ice. One of them or Stokes and Lorena together then attempted to pull one of the other girls out, but they fell into the water. All were drowned. 8981-723
