Walter B. Crowder, 56, farmer, saved Homer C. Blanton, 22, farmer, from suffocation, Zetella, Georgia, August 18, 1915. Blanton entered a 25-foot well and was affected within five minutes by gas or fumes it contained. While Crowder and Blanton’s father were trying to raise him with a rope, Blanton fell to the bottom unconscious. Crowder immediately slid down the well rope, which was withdrawn after his descent. Another rope was lowered, and Crowder tied it to Blanton, who was drawn out. Crowder felt choked and dizzy before the rope was returned to him, but he managed to tie it to himself and was drawn out. He was sick for a time but soon recovered. Blanton was unconscious for an hour and a half, but he recovered. 15413-1225
