Walter B. Prevost died attempting to save Cheree C. Fontenot from drowning, Pensacola Beach, Florida, July 29, 1984. Cheree, 13, was wading in the Gulf of Mexico close to shore when she was toppled by large waves and carried out by a strong undertow. Vacationing at the beach, Prevost, 35, stockbroker, entered the gulf and began to swim through the eight-foot-high waves to reach her. Although he made progress toward Cheree, Prevost was overcome short of reaching her. Rescue workers found Prevost, unconscious, a short time later and took him to shore, where revival efforts failed. Cheree’s body was found three miles from the scene of the accident. Both had drowned.
