Walter C. Sweet, 37, pipefitter, attempted to save John Bonick, 43, laborer; Thomas Fleming, 26, assistant foreman, and Martin Demyan, 29, laborer, from suffocation, Corning, New York, July 9, 1910. Bonick had fallen unconscious from gas at the bottom of a gas-producer, which was not in operation. After two other men had fallen unconscious attempting rescue, Sweet entered the producer, after being warned that it was dangerous to do so, and had started to tie a rope around Bonick when he was overcome. He was lifted out by means of a hook and revived. Bonick and the two other attempted rescuers were dead when gotten out. 5385-40
