Walter D. Huntington attempted to save M. Elizabeth Woodruff from drowning, Camas, Washington, June 27, 1926. Elizabeth, 9, waded to neck-deep water 35 feet from the bank in the Columbia River and then tried to swim but was carried off by the current. Fully clothed, Huntington, 49, dentist, who was a poor swimmer and was weakened by recent illness, waded from the bank and then swam 10 feet to Elizabeth. He tried to swim with her but made no headway, and both were submerged twice momentarily. As they were carried by the current, Huntington began to lose consciousness, gave Elizabeth a push toward the bank, and then sank, only his hand remaining visible. Elizabeth was rescued by her father. Huntington was later rescued by a young woman. He was revived with difficulty and was disabled for two weeks. 27864-2206
