Walter D. Merrow sustained fatal injuries rescuing Omer Pomerleau from a runaway, Waterville, Maine, October 29, 1917. While Pomerleau, 39, truckman, was driving a horse hitched to a wagon, the horse suddenly jumped, and a wheel of the wagon struck Pomerleau and knocked him down. He held to the lines and was dragged along on his back. Merrow, 59, conductor, ran to the horse, which was trotting moderately, and grasped the lines at the horse’s neck. Pomerleau then released the lines, and one wheel ran over his left arm. After Merrow had proceeded a short distance with the horse, he fell, and the wagon ran over him. The horse stopped 400 feet farther along the street. Merrow died of his injuries two days later. 18573-1448
