Walter H. Fisher died attempting to save Roy R. Scott from drowning, Hollins, Virginia, February 18, 1934. Scott, 20, broke through thin honeycombed ice on Carvins Cove Reservoir 273 feet from the bank and was momentarily submerged in water nine feet deep. He tried to hold to the edge of the ice, but the ice kept breaking. Fisher, 21, dental laboratory helper, who could not swim, walked 48 feet to within two feet of the hole, leaned forward, and extended his hand toward Scott. Scott extended his hand to Fisher. As their hands touched, the ice broke under Fisher, who was slightly submerged and then became separated from Scott. Both tried to climb out, broke more ice, and then sank. Both were drowned. 33833-2814
