Walter H. Olin, 23, truck driver, died attempting to save Jessie L. Salazar, 17, from drowning, Denver, Colorado, November 12, 1950. While Jessie, Olin, and others were skating on a pond, the ice broke beneath them, making a hole 12 feet in diameter. Jessie, who could not swim, was submerged briefly in water seven feet deep; and a small boy took hold of her from beneath the surface as the others reached safety. Heavily clothed and wearing ice-skates, Olin was immersed to his waist and climbing from the hole lay face down on the ice. Apprised by the others of Jessie’s predicament, Olin slid backward into the hole four feet from her and trod water. Impeded by the boy clinging to her and struggling to stay afloat, Jessie extended a hand toward Olin. Olin grasped her hand and supported her at the surface. A brother of Olin made his way cautiously to near the edge of the hole and momentarily obtained a hold on Olin but withdrew as more ice broke. Olin and Jessie suddenly sank. The boy did not reappear. All were drowned. 42135-3721
