Walter J. Wood, 14, student, saved Fleeta N. Johnson, 20, and A. Violet Grove, 17, from drowning, Amity, Oregon, July 10, 1917. While wading in the Yamhill River 30 feet from the bank, Mrs. Johnson and Violet stepped into deep water and were submerged. They struggled five feet from each other. Walter, who had just dived from the opposite bank, swam 30 feet to Mrs. Johnson. She grasped him, but he broke her hold and swam with her 20 feet to wadable water. Walter without pausing swam 12 feet to Violet, whose hand only was visible above the surface, and he swam with her 12 feet to wadable water. 18212-1622
