Walter James Brobyn, 18, student, attempted to save Wayne E. Paul, 16, student, from drowning, Ocean City, New Jersey, July 12, 1921. While wading in the Atlantic Ocean, Wayne was carried by a current and the undertow into deep water 210 feet from shore. Brobyn swam 130 feet to him and supported him and attempted to swim toward shore. They were carried farther from shore and under a pier 400 feet from shore. Brobyn was unable to get hold on piles under the pier and was clutched around the neck by Wayne, who was panic stricken and attempted to climb upon him, forcing him under water. The two became separated, and Brobyn, who was semiconscious, obtained support by clinging to a life ring, which was thrown from the pier, until he was rescued by a young man who swam to him from shore. Wayne sank 15 feet from Brobyn and was drowned. 21666-1828
