Walter James Nivens saved Miriam O. Mims from drowning, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, August 20, 1939. While wading in the Atlantic Ocean, Miss Mims, 18, and a young man lost their footing in a strong undertow and drifted to water beyond their depth. The young man and her brother tried to aid her and then swam to shore, and Miss Mims drifted in water eight feet deep 200 feet from shore. From wadable water Nivens, 21, lumber company assistant manager, swam 90 feet to Miss Mims, took hold of her, and swam 85 feet toward shore. Having almost reached the limit of his endurance, he then gave her a shove, and men in wadable water aided her to shore. Nivens got footing and then was aided to shore. 38358-3171
