Walter Jared H. Almond died attempting to save Edgar M. Chambers and Ray V. Cunningham from drowning, Round Bay, Maryland., March 7, 1941. From shore after sunset schoolboys Edgar, 13, and Ray, 13, rowed a boat in Round Bay of the Severn River and 10 minutes later were heard to call for help and to say that the boat was leaking. There was wind off shore of about 30 m.p.h., and waves were two to three feet high. Heavy snow was falling, and visibility was very poor. From shore Almond, 18, schoolboy, rowed a boat in the general direction of the boys, who could not be seen by the only person remaining on shore. A half an hour later four men in a boat tried to find the boys; but, although they heard calls at various intervals, they lost their bearing several times and were unsuccessful. Nine days later Almond’s body was found; and over a month later the bodies of the other boys were found, all far apart. 38906-3227
