Walter Joseph Bednarek, 20, laborer, attempted to save Jacob Schlaufman, 29, laborer; James J. Ragen, 50, labor foreman, and Clifford Moore, 40, laborer, from suffocation, Wyandotte, Michigan, August 2, 1928. Schlaufman, Ragen, and Moore were overcome by carbon dioxide in a tank car. Bednarek, who realized a deadly gas was present in the tank and had been warned against entering it, lowered himself through an opening at the top and dropped to the bottom of the tank. He held his breath and tried to tie a rope around Schlaufman. He was forced to breathe and was overcome. He and the others were removed by men wearing gas masks. Bednarek and Schlaufman were revived. Ragen and Moore were dead when taken from the tank. 28650-2307
