Walter K. Wood, 26, building construction superintendent helped in an attempt to save Alida M. Newey, 21, from drowning, Manasquan, New Jersey, September 23, 1922. While swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, Miss Newey was seized with cramp in deep water 100 feet from shore. The sea was very rough. There were breakers six feet high and a strong current. A man swam to Miss Newey and supported her, but they were unable to swim back to shore and drifted farther out. Although Wood was advised not to enter the water, he waded 15 feet from shore and swam 600 feet to Miss Newey and the man, who was swimming with her toward a rope attached to a pile 900 feet from shore. Wood, although very much fatigued, took hold of Miss Newey’s bathing suit and swam 350 feet farther to the rope. Miss Newey was then unconscious. She was supported at the rope by Wood and the man for a half-hour, until a large fishing boat was taken out to them. They were then taken to shore, but Miss Newey could not be revived. Wood was nearly exhausted. 22915-1904
