Walter Penman, 44, mine driver, assisted in an attempt to save Andrew J. Hamilton, 35, clay miner, and Reuben A. Brown, 50, mine driver, from a mine cave-in, Brazil, Indiana, December 3, 1923. (See case of REUBEN A. BROWN.) Penman arrived just after Brown and helped Brown in an attempt to lift the slab off Hamilton. Just before the second fall occurred, Penman left to get help, attracting the attention of four other miners. Penman then returned, and as he and other miners were about to move the slab away from Brown, a chunk of shale fell on Brown, just missing Penman. Others soon freed Brown and Hamilton. 24637-1896
