Walter R. Fuchs died as a result of helping to save an unidentified girl from drowning, Dayton, Ohio, June 27, 1948. While bathing in Huffman Lake in water 10 feet deep 25 feet from the bank, the girl, about 11 years old, screamed in distress. Fuchs, 30, welder, ran to the water and partly clothed waded and swam to the girl, who had been briefly submerged. Fuchs took hold of her and turned toward the bank, from which several men went out to them. Fuchs handed the girl to two of the men, who brought her unconscious to the bank. About a minute thereafter Fuchs suddenly sank at the point he had helped the girl. His body was recovered five minutes later, but he could not be revived. The girl was revived. 41449-3583
