Walter S. Slear, 27, hotel clerk, saved Harry C. Creger, 11, from drowning, Tecumseh, Michigan, December 9, 1906. Without removing his skates, Slear sat down on the ice on the Raisin River, 150 feet from the bank, and slid into a hole that had been made by Harry breaking through.
