Warren E. Spearin sustained fatal injuries attempting to save an indeterminate person or persons from a runaway, North New Portland, Maine, May 29, 1916. A spirited horse, hitched to a dump cart, ran away toward a street on which were adults and children. Spearin, 46, laborer, ran after the horse, which was galloping, and succeeded in grasping the shaft of the cart. He tried to reach the horse’s head, but the horse was going too fast. After running a short distance with the horse, Spearin fell, and the wheels of the cart ran over him. Spearin died three days later as a result of his injuries. 16554-1447
