Warren L. Nott, 41, fireman, died helping to save Clarence O. Dailey, 47, district sales manager, from drowning, Milwaukie, Oregon, February 5, 1956. While attempting to save his son, 13, who had broken through the ice on Kellogg Lake, Dailey also broke through the ice and was submerged in water 10 feet deep 68 feet from the nearest bank. When he attempted to climb out of the water ice broke off, enlarging the hole to 10 feet. Dailey then clung to the edge of the ice as two men on the opposite bank started toward him in a boat, breaking the ice ahead of them. Shortly afterwards two other men followed in another boat. Nott and another fireman then arrived at the bank nearest Dailey with a fire truck containing a 25 foot ladder and a 100-foot rope. The rope was tossed to Dailey but landed out of reach, and Nott then walked across the ice pushing the ladder ahead of him until its forward end reached the hole. Dailey was able to climb only part way out of the hole onto the ladder, and Nott then told him to maintain his hold while he went to get the rope. Nott took three steps, and the ice broke beneath him, submerging him in deep water 40 feet from the bank. Nott returned to the surface and tried several times to climb out, enlarging the hole to 10 feet. He then supported himself by resting his elbows on the ice. One end of the rope was tossed from safe ice to within reach of Nott, but by then his arms had slipped from the ice and he was struggling to remain afloat. As the other fireman called to him to grasp the rope, Nott suddenly sank and did not again return to the surface. A policeman tried to reach Nott with the rope, but he broke through the ice and was pulled back to the bank by the fireman holding the other end of the rope. Unaware that Nott had been submerged, the men in the first boat reached Dailey and his son and took them to the bank. Men in both boats then removed Nott from the hole. Nott could not be revived. Dailey and his son were treated for shock and exposure. They recovered. 43752-4091
