Wayne Arthur Luoma died attempting to save Mark J. Jagunich from burning, Eveleth, Minnesota, December 23, 1966. At night, while Jagunich, 17, schoolboy, Luoma, 17, schoolboy, and two other youths were asleep in a three-room log cabin near a lake, fire broke out on the ceiling of the bedroom. Luoma wakened and shouted to his companions to get out. The other two youths reached the bedroom door, which led outside, and emerged from the cabin. Luoma followed them onto the porch but then stopped and shouted that Jagunich stil1was inside. Flames and smoke were increasing rapidly as Luoma turned and ran back into the bedroom. Shortly thereafter the other two youths heard a call for help from either Jagunich or Luoma. The youths broke the bedroom window but were driven back by an explosive spread of flames which quickly filled the cabin. 0ne youth ran a quarter of a mile to the nearest dwelling and summoned firemen, but by the time they arrived at the cabin it had burned to the ground. The bodies of Jagunich and Luoma were found in the debris.
