Wayne Robert Connick helped to save Richard P. Bingold from drowning, Hillsboro Beach, Florida, September 22, 1978. At night, a motorboat crashed on a rock jetty in an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in severe injury to Bingold, 43. A smaller motorboat, containing Connick, 18, high school student, and two other teenagers, approached but could not get close enough to aid Bingold. Connick entered the deep water and swam to Bingold, who grasped him in panic and caused them to be submerged briefly. Despite the strong current, Connick managed to tow Bingold to the smaller boat, where the other youths aided in getting him aboard. The boat then was piloted to shore; and Bingold was removed to a hospital. He recovered.
