Wayne W. Gilchrist saved Thomas R. Wimbish from drowning, Sunset Beach, California, April 22, 1922. While swimming in the Pacific Ocean, Thomas, 13, schoolboy, was caught in a tide-rip and carried 800 feet from shore. Boats were swamped each time men tried during a half-hour to take them through the breakers to Thomas. Wayne, 17, student, although advised not to attempt to swim to Thomas, entered the water almost fully clothed, waded 125 feet, and then swam 675 feet to Thomas. He took hold of Thomas and with great effort swam 675 feet with him to wadable water. Wayne changed his hold and allowed Thomas to hold to him at times and was a half-hour taking Thomas to others, who carried Thomas to shore. 22361-2008
