Wayne Wahl died attempting to save a man from drowning, Ozona, Texas, April 28, 1985. Heavy rains had caused Wildcat Draw to flood onto adjacent highways, and when a man attempted to drive in the vicinity, his car stalled and was pulled into the draw. With difficulty, the man left his car and swam to a bush, to which he held; the car floated farther downstream and lodged. Checking on flood conditions, Wahl, 38, deputy sheriff, saw the stranded car. He tied a cable around himself and waded into the draw to check the car for occupants. Before he could reach the car, the force of the current pulled him into a drain pipe, where he drowned. The motorist was discovered by firefighters and was removed from the draw. 60364-7006
