Wesley Brower died attempting to save Elbert P. Stuyvesant from suffocation, Port Washington, New York, July 7, 1924. While working on a ladder in a cesspool 15 feet deep, which contained carbon dioxide, Stuyvesant, 56, clerk, was overcome and fell into sewage water three feet deep. Stuyvesant’s employer descended to help him but was affected and collapsed as he was pulled out by his wife and daughter. Brower, 28, chauffeur, then arrived and immediately descended the ladder but was overcome and fell into the water beside Stuyvesant. They were removed from the cesspool with hooks about 20 minutes later, but they were dead. 24415-1992
