Wess Scott saved Eugene Morrow from suffocation, Antreville, South Carolina, April 17, 1941. Morrow, 44, farmer, was overcome by gas in a well 65 feet deep. Fearing gas, three other men would not enter to save Morrow; and one of them advised Scott, who had been brought to the well, not to enter. Fastening an end of a windlass rope around his thigh and having a handkerchief tied over his face, Scott, 50, farmer, held to the rope and was lowered to Morrow. Scott removed the rope from himself, fastened it around Morrow, and tied Morrow to the rope. He felt dizzy; but removing the handkerchief, he tied it over Morrow’s nose and mouth; and Morrow was drawn to the surface. The rope then was lowered to Scott, who looped it around himself, held to it, and was drawn from the well. He was dizzy and nauseated. Morrow was revived. 38984-3220
