Wilbur J. Witzel saved a woman from being struck by a train, San Mateo, California, June 11, 1990. A woman was attempting to cross the tracks at a commuter rail station when she lost her footing and fell onto one of the tracks. A commuter train was approaching the station on that track at a high rate of speed. The woman tried to rise but fell a second time. Witzel, 42, flagman, was standing on the passenger platform opposite the woman and saw her fall. He immediately jumped from the platform and ran to the woman as the train, in emergency braking, bore down on her, its horn blowing. Witzel pulled the woman off the track just before the front of the train passed them.
