Wilfried H. Gross rescued Josephine E. Drew, 43; Anna Dickson, 52; George Jones, 23, and two children, 8 and 5, from a runaway, Louisville, Kentucky, April 30, 1913. Jones, coachman, was driving a horse hitched to a carriage in which were the women and children. The shaft became loose and dropped, and the horse became frightened and got beyond Jones’s control. The horse galloped at a speed of about 12 m.p.h. along a paved street, and the carriage swung from side to side. Gross, 39, mail carrier, ran into the street and grabbed the horse’s collar with one hand and a rein with the other. At times his feet were off the ground as he pulled back on the rein, and he ran about 180 feet with the horse before it stopped. The horse narrowly missed an obstruction in the street. 11594-1070
