Willard P. Van Deventer, 51, railroad conductor, saved Katharine Flattinger, 52, and attempted to save Elizabeth Schemper, 53, from being run over by a train, Trenton, New Jersey, October 16, 1907. Van Deventer jumped in front of the moving train, the engine being in the rear, and pushed Mrs. Flattinger from the track but was knocked down while endeavoring to remove Mrs. Schemper. One wheel of the train ran over his left foot, necessitating amputation. Mrs. Schemper also was injured and died as the result. 1972-155
