William A. Cathey saved W. Styron and Edwin R. Harris, Jr., from burning, Sylva, North Carolina, October 27, 1917. Styron, 6, and Edwin, 9, were caught in a bedroom on the second floor of their home when the house took fire at night, and they were overcome with smoke. Cathey, 25, salesman, climbed to the roof of a porch and entered the bedroom through a broken window that was close to the porch. He closed his eyes, held his breath, and groped for the boys, finding them five feet from the window. He took them to the window one at a time, passed them to a man on the porch roof, and got onto the roof and thence to the ground. A minute or two later the bedroom was enveloped in flames. The boys were revived. 18489-1580
