William Allen Brown saved Steven L. and Michael J. Plautz from burning, Memphis, Tennessee, September 13, 1989. Twins Steven and Michael, 19, were dazed inside their subcompact automobile after a highway accident. Flames erupted on the hood of the car, above its fuel tank. Brown, 41, letter carrier, witnessed the collision and approached the burning car. Despite growing flames and intense heat, Brown opened the passenger door, leaned inside the car, and freed Steven from his safety belt. Grasping Steven, Brown pulled him out of the car and dragged him to safety. Brown then returned to the car, roused Michael, and helped him out. Steven and Michael required hospital treatment for injuries received during the collision, and they recovered.
