William B. Fleming, 26, lighting specialist, saved Farest D. Uselton, 18, soldier, from drowning, Fort Screven, Georgia, September 8, 1926. While bathing in the Atlantic Ocean, Uselton was seized with cramp about 350 feet from shore. There was a strong off-shore current. Fleming swam 60 feet through rough water and breakers five feet high to him, and Uselton grabbed him. Fleming broke Uselton’s hold and then tried to take him toward shore. Failing in this and being fatigued, Fleming swam parallel to shore with Uselton for 35 feet and caught hold of a pile. Waves broke over his head as he clung to the pile, but in a short time men swam to him and relieved him of Uselton, and Fleming swam 60 feet to wadable water. 26683-2233
