William B. Shelander II rescued Ronald D. Dobson from assault, Washington, Illinois, September 15, 1988. Stopped in traffic at an intersection, Dobson, 47, who had been kidnapped at gunpoint in his car, struggled with his abductor for control of the abductor’s loaded handgun. Also stopped at the intersection, Shelander, 20, saw the struggle. He got out of his car and approached Dobson’s. After Dobson called out for help, Shelander opened the driver’s door of the car, took hold of the gun, and removed it from the car. After disposing of the gun, Shelander helped to subdue the assailant until authorities arrived.
